Fertility and Relationships: How IVF Affects Partners

“For many couples, conceiving a child happens naturally, but for others, fertility challenges may arise, requiring medical intervention. Knowing when to consult a specialist can make all the difference in diagnosing and treating underlying fertility problems early.

If you’re under 35 and have been trying for over a year, or over 35 and trying for six months, it’s time to consult a fertility specialist, advises Dr. Sonali Mandal Bandyopadhyay, IVF Specialist at Birla Fertility and IVF Howrah. Don’t overlook signs of male fertility disorders, such as low sperm count, abnormal sperm motility, or sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation, as these can significantly impact fertility. For women, irregular periods, painful menstruation, or underlying conditions like PCOS or endometriosis are also red flags.

Fertility issues can stem from a variety of causes. For women, common symptoms include irregular or absent menstrual cycles, indicating potential problems with ovulation, or unusually painful periods, which may be linked to conditions like endometriosis. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is another frequent cause of infertility, characterized by hormonal imbalances that interfere with ovulation.

In men, issues such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or sexual dysfunction can severely impact the ability to conceive. Sperm disorders are often overlooked, but they account for nearly half of all infertility cases. Early diagnosis can lead to better treatment outcomes and significantly improve the chances of conception.”
